Town News 02/06/06

Brooks people may be recieving financial aid from the province for the flooding in Brooks last year. Anyone that had any problems should keep records of expenses and damages. Ralph bucks have made their way too Brooks and it has pumped around 8,000,000 into the Brooks economy. Retail stores and bars have benefited most from the rebates. Safeway purchased the Cassils center mall and they are expected to start building their new store soon. There have been a lot of satellite radio's stolen from vehicals as of late and residents should keep then out of site.

 

Town News 03/01/06

Brooks resident is now worlds #1 fencer. Sherraine MacKay of Brooks, Alberta won her second gold medal. She beat Imke Duplitzer of Germany 15-14 in the final of the Saint Maur World Cup Grand Prix. Now that she beat the Germen she is now ranked number one. Mackay said that she is happy to be ranked number one and that it is quite a feeling to be ranked above everyone in the fencing community. Monte Solberg of Brooks has been appointed a Cabinet position by prime minister Steven Harper. The ministers were sworn in Monday morning. Monte Solberg recently won his seat in the Brooks/Medicine hat riding by a landslide. The first Cabinet meeting of the Conservative government took place Monday afternoon. Red Deer now has a strip club called Bronco Billys so now there is another place to watch stippers besides the oxford hotel in Brooks.

 

Town News 01/24/06

News Around town (January 24th, 2006). Monty Soberg won his seat again the Medicine Hat and Brooks riding helping the conservatives win their minority government. Luigis pizza has closed down and its old building is now being taken over by Gus's Pizza and First Station Pub. The Panago pizza in Brooks has shut down due to lack of workers but the rumour around town is that a new manager may start up the business again. There was an incident at the Safari nightclub in Brooks involving workers at the bar and some guests. A fake handgun and a knife were involved in the incident. The weather in Brooks this winter has been well above average and we are to hit highs of 10 degrees this week. The movie theatre is playing "Fun with Dick and Jane" this week. The Brooks Bandits are having their $30,000 dollar raffle at their game on Febuary 3rd, 2006. The bandits also beat the first place Grizzlies on January 19th. Full Story Brooks Bulletin

 

Officer Assaulted by Lakeside Strickers

On October 19th, 2005 an officer who was patrolling the strike at Lakeside was assaulted by an adult male by the name of James Achuil Kuol, 35, of Brooks has been charged and is set to appear in court. The conditions of his release state that he must not go within 200 meters of the Labour dispute activity at Lakeside.

 

6 Charged in Brooks 10/24/05

Five Lakeside employees and a former company president have now been charged with offences ranging from dangerous driving to criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The charges stem from a collision involving UFCW Local 401 President Douglas O.Halloran Friday evening on highway 873 one kilometer north of the Airport Road turn off. Police say O.Halloran was transported to Brooks Hospital by ambulance. During early hours of the investigation, five people were taken into custody. Further investigation determined that four vehicles were involved; four of the five taken into custody were later charged and released. Garnet Altwasser, Patrick Gummeson, Derek Lewis and Kaye Kronenbusch have been charged with one count of dangerous driving each and will appear in Brooks Provincial Court on November 30. The investigation was conducted jointly by the Brooks RCMP, the Calgary General Investigation Section and Lethbridge Collision Reconstruction Specialist. Two additional persons were arrested and charged Monday morning. Andrew Crocker and Carey Kopp of Brooks are each charged with five Criminal Code offences--dangerous driving, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, mischief causing danger to life, criminal harassment and intimidation. Lakeside Strike News 09/26/05

The report of the Disputes Inquiry Board on the negotiations between Lakeside Packers and the UFCW has been received by Human Resources and Employment Minister Mike Cardinal. Both parties received a copy of the report and have until midnight September 29 to respond to the Board.s recommendations.

If accepted by both parties, the recommendations are binding and will be included in a new collective agreement covering about 2,400 employees at Lakeside.s beef carcass and box beef processing facility.
