Town News 03/24/06

News Around town (March 24th, 2006). The City of Brooks council is looking into building a new hockey rink in Brooks. Brooks currently has two rinks located at the Lakeside Leisure center but both arenas are getting to be quite old. The roof is cracking, and it just meets the fire and safety codes, the seating and atmosphere of the rinks are quite dated. To bring the building up to "snuff", it would cost and estimated 3.8 million dollars. The City council is unsure of where to located the new rink, The Engineering consultants did not reccommend that the existing rinks be upgraded, but a new better site with adequate parking be used. Currently there are not enough parking spots for the arena and many people have to park quite a distance and walk or park in the residential areas which surround the current arena. Many Brooks Alberta residence are complaining that the parking problem was ignored when the Lakeside Leisure center was first upgraded and now a new building has to be built.

There has been a lot of talk around Brooks about the Cassils Mall construction. Cassils mall has been purchased by Safeway and the Mall is being demolished for a new commercial building that will be half Safeway and half Canadian Tire. This will make the two chains in Brooks both full sized stores. Since the success of Wal-Mart many other major chains have been considering moving to Brooks because of its strong economy. There will also be a Starbucks located in the new and improved Safeway. This is the first time the Starbucks franchise has attempted business in Brooks Alberta. Many coffee drinkers are excisted.
